STEPS TO CHOOSING A GREAT CAREER.
it may be viewed as begging the question to make a career a choice when the options are not there. it could further be asked, will there ever be a time the number of available jobs will outnumber the employable graduates and non-graduates alike? statistics of our population juxtaposed against the number of new entrants into the labour market makes this day more like a dream. Responsive action should then probe into; What must i do to have a fruitful and fulfilling job' in the face of the biting job scarcity and strong competition for few desirable ones?
It therefore becomes important that the search for a meaningful career develops from the consciousness of the individuals' unique capabilities rather than the societal expectation.
The realities of our time make a departure away from the traditional factors like parents/peer pressure in career decision mandatory. For a career to be fruitful and fulfilling (great), self-interest must occupy the center stage in the decision making process as this serves as a shield from others dumping their fears and biases on individuals and thereby jeopardizing the chances of effective career decision. Shedding light on the extent of dependence on the traditional factors, Westman et al remarked; "Listen to advice but make your own decision ultimately. Parents,teachers, and career counselors_ all of them tend to mean well but they're not you. Its you who has to feel comfortable with the cloak you wear, the boot you strap on, and the daily routine that you adapt to. Nobody else can truly know what works for you"(westman et al,2014). No wonder covey and colosimo describe individuals' distinctive contribution as "the what" of a great career. It rises from within yourself, from your unique mix of talents and passions. It is what you alone can create, no matter your line of work"(colosimo,2009).
Considering that which career to pursue remains the prerogative of the individual-primarily, the first step should be provoked by the consciousness of the "who i am" and "what is important to me in life?" Parental and peer inputs/pressure, however, should be considered as a support to what to think about in career decision-making process. For a guide on some steps to follow in making a career decision , the Deepak chopras 4-stepsare highly recommended and i present them to you here slightly edited.
step 1-Articulate a vision
Proactive decision making begins with a clear vision of what you want your personal and professional life to be like . To be successful in visualizing your future, you need to have a strong desire to achieve your goal. In crafting your vision, beware of thoughts that might limit your choices. A good example is placing so much emphasis on the effect of your choices on those you love and care about. Thought this is necessary, it can also prevent you from identifying and following a truly rewarding career path. At the stage of visioning, the primary goal should be to take an honest look at oneself and ones needs for the future.
Considering of 'reality' and the 'potential barriers' to achieving ones goal should follow the creation of a vision that clearly and accurately reflects one desired future. Apart from articulating the implications of the potential influencing factors in the career decison process like culture, family, gender and sexual orientation for example, it is importantfor one to think about the expected actions required to overcome such barriers and attain the desired goal.
step 2-Take an initial decision
Assessment of occupational alternatives can be approached via diverse ways. On one hand ,career can be prioritized according to how closely they match ones overall goal. Differently, a comparison of careers from the perspective of advantages,disadvantages and potential outcomes can also serve the same purpose. Whichever assessment option that is adopted, an individual should pay attention to his or her feelings about each alternative to identify if a given career under assessment creates excitement or disenchantment.
step 3-Set a goal
Effective goal setting allows you to take control of your life. Your attitude is the most important predictor of success in achieving goals. Positive and negative thoughts can affect your level of accomplishment; you are likely to achieve only what you believe you can. A goal is simply a more precise statement of a decision reached in the previous step.
To ensure that you achieve your goal, Deepak Chopra noted, it should meet the following criteria;
> Specific: a goal is specific when you know exactly what is to be achieved and accomplished
>Measurable: measurable goals are quantifiable (e.g.,Numbers,dollars,percentages)
>Achievable; an achievable goal is within your reach(perhaps a stretch) based on your skills and level of motivation.
>Realistic: a realistic goal is one for which you have the resources (e.g., time for training, money for education, support from significant others);
>Time specific; a time-specific goal is finite;it has a deadline (e.g 'by june 30,2016' is much more specific than 'soon').
step 4-Design an action plan
Having visualized your future, made an initial decision on which career option to pursue and set a goal, it is very critical to draft a clearly articulated action plan. Action plan details both the short and long-term steps that must be taken to attain a specific goal.
Besides serving as a road map on the actions to take in pursuit of a desired goal, it also helps you to keep a tab on those potential barriers that could negatively impact on goal attainment (the secret to making good decision).

Entreprenuer, Creatives Thinking and Decent Work Opportunities.
The literature on entreprenuership suggest there are millions of ventures scattered across the globe. Entreprenuership is vital for economic growth and development. it stimulates job creation and decent work. the past decades have witnessed significant innovation and creative break through among enterprises in Europe,America, and lately Asia. The Africa continent is yet to keep pace with its industrialised counterparts. Many African business do not survive past their fifth year of establishment. poor investment climate and weak supporting institutions constrain Africas businesses.
Nigeria with over 160 million people accounts for a fifth of africas population. According to the world banks doing business,the country ranks poorly in the most of the key indicators of enterprise success(World bank,2013).
Despite the neglect by its government and the financial sector,nigeria businesses, especially the informal sector,are resilient and thriving. They contribute one-third of the gross domestic product,which is unaccounted for due to poor official records. Against all odds, a few entreprenuers have succeeded in both developed and developing economies. The following examples illustrates cases of successful entreprenuers and their common attributes and definitions.
Bill Gates,Microsoft founder,has topped the forbes billionaires'list 15 times over 20 years. He started programming at age 14,incorporated microsoft and became a billionaire in his 20s. In Africa, Nigeria's Dangote has become the continents richest person with a net worth of $25 billion.
There is hardly an employee who is a billionaire. Great entreprenuers and world richest people are founders and business owners. They pass through the process of identifying and starting a business ventures. they are not managers and not necessarily leaders. they are profitably meeting needs. their attributes includes passion,resilience,risk taking,forecasting,innovation,vision,patience etc.
